The Supreme Court on Monday declined a final appeal from former President Donald Trump's legal team, effectively ending his attempt to overturn a $5 million defamation verdict awarded to E. Jean Carroll.

The court did not offer an explanation for its decision to deny the petition for a rehearing.

The verdict, initially granted in May 2023, found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll. In January 2024, a separate jury awarded Carroll an additional $83.3 million in damages in a subsequent defamation trial. Trump has continued to contest both judgments.

This latest action by the Supreme Court means the earlier rulings stand, including the $5 million awarded for sexual abuse and defamation. Trump's legal team had sought the rehearing after the Supreme Court initially denied a review of the case.
