The Supreme Court on Monday declined to revive new U.S. Postal Service rules that would have imposed stricter requirements for mail-in ballots ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The high court left in place a lower court's nationwide injunction that had blocked the proposed changes.
Justice Samuel Alito, joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, dissented from the decision. Justice Brett Kavanaugh agreed with the majority that the new rules could not be implemented so close to an election.
The court's action means that the existing mail-in ballot procedures will remain in effect for the upcoming midterms, as determined by the lower court's ruling.
