Supreme Court Allows Trump Administration to Use Social Security Data for Voter Screening

The Supreme Court has temporarily allowed the Trump administration to use Social Security Administration data to help screen state voter registration information for noncitizen voters. The unsigned order from Friday overrules prior decisions by lower courts that had prohibited the Department of Homeland Security from employing this data.
The administration sought to utilize the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system to cross-reference voter registration data with Social Security information. The goal was to identify individuals registered to vote who may not be U.S. citizens.
The three liberal justices on the Supreme Court dissented from the decision.
