The rising cost of living and increased alcohol taxes have significantly altered consumer purchasing habits, leading to a surge in popularity for "wine dupes" – affordable alternatives that mimic the taste and appearance of more expensive brands.

Wine critic Helena Nicklin conducted a blind taste test to identify the best supermarket copycats. The findings suggest these dupes are a significant bargain, offering comparable or even superior quality to their well-known counterparts, often at a fraction of the cost. Some dupes are produced using similar methods and grape varieties, while others are distinct brands with similar flavor profiles. Increasingly, supermarkets are developing their own versions to compete with established names.

Nicklin's analysis highlighted several successful dupes across various wine categories.

For rosé, the Sainte Victoire Côtes de Provence Rosé from Aldi was identified as a strong alternative to Whispering Angel. Nicklin noted that Sainte Victoire, a sub-appellation of Côtes de Provence, offered an authentic Provencal profile with mineral freshness, outperforming Whispering Angel at less than half the price. Screaming Devil was also mentioned as a less fruity but crisper option.

In the red wine category, the original Porta 6, a Portuguese wine known for its bramble and dark chocolate notes, found a rival in Animus Douro. While Porta 6 originates from the Lisbon region, Animus Douro, from the Douro region, presented a richer, more complex profile with notes of red berries, currants, fruitcake, and spice, described as big yet silky and exceptional value.

The trend of "jammy" red wines, exemplified by the original Jam Shed, also has supermarket counterparts. Casillero del Diablo's Jammy Red Devil, a Chilean Shiraz with a dash of Carmenère, was found to offer a touch more complexity and drinkability than the straightforward Australian Shiraz of Jam Shed, at the same price point.

When it comes to Chardonnay, the bold, oaky style of Bread & Butter Chardonnay has a dupe in Greasy Fingers Big, Buttery Chardonnay. The dupe was described as a more classic oaked Chardonnay, offering freshness with less cloying sweetness and more savory, toasty oak, making it a better all-rounder. Another option, Butter Side Up Chardonnay from Asda, was noted as a closer match but with more synthetic sweetness.

For those seeking an alternative to the popular 19 Crimes Chardonnay, Andrew Peace White Label was recommended. This Australian Chardonnay was praised for tasting authentically of Chardonnay without excessive sugar, offering fresh notes of white peach, melon, and citrus with light oak.

In the Sauvignon Blanc market, the benchmark Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc has competition from Luis Felipe Edwards' 'Signature Series' Sauvignon Blanc from coastal Chile, noted for its intense aromatics and tropical fruit notes at a lower cost. A Lidl offering, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valley, was also highlighted for its focused herbaceousness.

The "Chicken Wine," La Vieille Ferme, a dry rosé from the Rhône Valley, has a supermarket counterpart in Aldi's Le Petit Poulet Rosé. While not as smooth as the original, it was deemed a decent drop for the price, suitable for parties.

For sparkling wine, Graham Beck Brut NV from South Africa emerged as a value-for-money alternative to Moët et Chandon Imperial Brut NV. Made using the traditional method and similar grapes, Graham Beck offers fruitiness at a more accessible price. Sainsbury' Blanc de Noirs Champagne was also noted as a budget-friendly real Champagne option.

In the Spanish red category, Marques de Riscal Rioja Reserva's profile of spiced leather and ripe bramble fruit is echoed in Monte Plogar Gran Reserva. This alternative, made with different grapes from a different Spanish region, is aged to perfection and offers similar complex notes, ideal for roasted meats.

Finally, the reliable Casillero del Diablo Merlot has a close competitor in Estevez Chilean Merlot. Described as plummy, juicy, and velvety smooth, Estevez "massively over-delivers for the price," offering a classic Merlot profile. M-52_1786049745529.jpg
