Macdonald stated that his staff found approximately 100 plays posted by fans on X (formerly Twitter) after filming Broncos training camp practices in 2024. As the Seahawks' first game of the season was against Denver, Macdonald scouted these plays for a competitive advantage, contributing to Seattle's 26-20 victory.
According to Macdonald's account in an interview with Graham Bensinger, Payton discovered the Seahawks' scouting methods mid-season and "lost his mind." Payton reportedly contacted Seahawks general manager John Schneider, threatening to go public with accusations of spying in a manner reminiscent of the NFL's "Spygate" scandal.
Macdonald emphasized that the Seahawks did not engage in cheating, but rather utilized information that had been voluntarily shared online. Later that season, Macdonald encountered Payton at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Macdonald recounted that Payton, contrary to his earlier threats, acted as if the incident had not occurred. "He was just like, 'Hey coach,' and he totally backed down in that moment," Macdonald said.
