Sunny Hostin Calls Kelly Clarkson 'Petty' Following Leaked Store Footage
The View co-host revisits the controversy surrounding the singer's interaction at a Brooklyn shop.
Sunny Hostin has again criticized Kelly Clarkson, labeling the singer as "petty" after security footage surfaced from a Brooklyn store where Clarkson alleged mistreatment. The comments were made on Thursday's episode of "The View," where the co-hosts discussed the newly released footage that emerged following a segment on "Pablo Torre Finds Out."
Hostin reiterated her previous stance, stating, "It seems like she kind of had a bit of a tantrum because she starts putting things back kind of quickly." She noted that Clarkson "wasn’t in the store very long." Guest co-host Raven-Symoné agreed, calling Clarkson "petty," to which Hostin responded, "She was a little petty."
Hostin emphasized the responsibility that comes with a large platform, noting Clarkson's millions of followers. "I just can’t imagine that she doesn’t know that there’s that social media mob hanging out on the internet," Hostin said. "The rage machine is something I’m sure she has been subjected to because she’s a star."
Raven-Symoné, however, pushed back against the criticism of Clarkson speaking out, arguing, "I think it’s unfair just because she had that many followers she’s not allowed to express how she feels about what happened to her." She recalled a personal experience of feeling disrespected and not having fan agreement upon seeing footage.
"Our experience about the situation might not resonate with you the same way that it resonated with [us]," Raven-Symoné explained. "You don’t know my past. You don’t know what I’ve been through."
She also pointed out Clarkson's upbringing, stating, "If somebody’s touching her trigger button about wealth or money, you don’t know how she received that." Raven-Symoné added, "I saw the video, too, and I feel like if you treated her like every other person that came into that store, then you’re telling everybody they can’t afford it."
Previously, Hostin had stated on Monday's "The View" that the incident "should have been handled privately" and expressed discomfort with it being shared on social media.
The controversy began when Clarkson accused the Brooklyn curiosity shop Art of Play of treating her similarly to Julia Roberts' character in "Pretty Woman." The store later claimed the item Clarkson was interested in, a mechanical bird, was not for sale. Clarkson then accused the store of lying, stating on X, "So you’re not only rude, you’re also a liar. Got it."
Art of Play subsequently released a statement calling the incident a "misunderstanding" and asserting that Clarkson was only in the store for five minutes. Co-owner Adam Rubin described the situation as "ludicrous" and "surreal," characterized as a "he-said, she-said" scenario. He criticized Clarkson's actions as a "reprehensible abuse of power."
Clarkson has since returned to her Las Vegas residency, addressing the audience on Wednesday amidst the ongoing dispute.
