Sunny Hostin, co-host of "The View," has been accused of disseminating misinformation concerning the murder trial of Karmelo Anthony, who was convicted of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf in April 2025. Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison after a jury rejected his self-defense claim.
Critics argue that Hostin misrepresented key aspects of the case during discussions on the television program. One primary assertion from Hostin was that Anthony was denied a fair trial because there were no Black individuals on the jury. However, reports indicate that potential Black jurors were excluded because they could not guarantee impartiality or because their professional roles, such as educators, might offer them specific insights into school-related events. The concept of a "jury of one's peers" does not solely depend on shared racial identity.
Further allegations of misinformation involve Hostin's portrayal of the physical differences between Anthony and Metcalf. Hostin claimed Metcalf, weighing 200 pounds, was significantly more imposing than Anthony, who she stated weighed 130 pounds. According to recruitment profiles, Anthony is 5-foot-11 and weighs 162 pounds. Witnesses at the trial testified that Anthony provoked the altercation, allegedly saying, "Touch me and see what happens," before producing a weapon. The prosecution presented evidence that Anthony possessed the murder weapon at a school event and that he responded to a shove with a fatal stabbing.
Hostin also reportedly misstated the racial composition of individuals present at the time of the stabbing, claiming Anthony was the only Black person associated with Metcalf's team. However, other Black students reportedly testified for the prosecution.
Austin Metcalf's father, Jeff Metcalf, who was under a gag order until the trial concluded, has spoken out to counter what he describes as falsehoods. He stated that "people had their own opinions without even seeing the facts." Jeff Metcalf has reportedly challenged "The View" to feature him on the program.
Amidst the legal proceedings and subsequent media commentary, disturbing social media trends have emerged. These include teens on TikTok performing a dance known as the "Austin Bop," where they mimic stabbing themselves, and AI-generated images depicting disrespect at Metcalf's grave. While the article acknowledges these are more extreme than Hostin's remarks, it suggests that the commentary on "The View" contributes to the dehumanization of the victim and the construction of a narrative that justifies the violence.
Attorneys are reportedly assembling a team for Anthony's appeal. The case has drawn attention for the clash between the legal verdict and the public discourse surrounding racial dynamics and the justice system.
