Sunderland Struggles Continue, Defender Blames Arrogance
Nordi Mukiele calls team "not good enough" after fourth straight Premier League loss.
Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele has pointed to potential "arrogance" within the squad as a reason for the team's current struggles in the Premier League, stating they are "not good enough." The Black Cats suffered their fourth consecutive league defeat on Sunday, a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth, leaving them second from bottom in the table.
After a surprisingly strong return to the top flight last season, which saw them qualify for the Europa League, Sunderland has faltered this term. Following their Europa League victories against AZ Alkmaar and Torreense, the team has lost both of their subsequent Premier League matches. The club spent approximately £60 million on five new players this summer, in addition to reinvesting £161 million on 15 players after their promotion in the summer of 2025. Key players like captain Granit Xhaka and striker Brian Brobbey, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, were retained.
After seven games last season, Sunderland had accumulated 11 points, placing them ninth. This season, they have just four points from the same number of matches, with one win, one draw, and five defeats.
Head coach Regis le Bris echoed Mukiele's disappointment, admitting the team was "below the level" and that their performance was "not acceptable." Despite acknowledging a busy schedule and the challenge of competing on multiple fronts, Le Bris stated that "we won't find excuses" and emphasized that the current league position is "not good."
In the loss to Bournemouth, Sunderland conceded early in the sixth minute following a defensive error involving summer recruit Kevin Danso, a loan signing from Tottenham Hotspur. Danso was later sent off in the 17th minute for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Omar Alderete's weak backpass in the second half gifted Bournemouth their second goal. According to Opta, Sunderland has committed five errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season, the highest in the league. Alderete and Danso are among the players with multiple errors leading to goals.
Sunderland has conceded 14 goals in seven games, more than double their tally at this stage last season. They have scored only six goals, and their three shots against Bournemouth, all off target, represent the lowest total for any team in a Premier League match this season. However, it should be noted that their early fixtures have included matches against strong opponents such as Manchester City, Arsenal, and Brighton.
Mukiele stressed the need for hard work and a return to the team's form from the previous season, stating, "You cannot lie about football and today I don't want to say we didn't want to win this game, but it didn't look like we want something."
