Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has been removed from the Switzerland national football team squad after admitting to using a fraudulent COVID-19 vaccine certificate in 2022. Swiss authorities are investigating the offense, which could result in a substantial fine or a prison sentence of up to five years.

Xhaka, 33, made the confession in a statement posted on Instagram, addressing reports about the matter. He explained that he had "personal uncertainty and serious concerns" regarding the vaccine at the time, experiencing "deep distrust" and being "plagued by fear and uncertainty."

During this period, he obtained a vaccination certificate instead of addressing his concerns through official channels, a decision he now acknowledges as a mistake. "I take responsibility for this decision, am committed to investigating the matter, and am fully cooperating with the relevant authorities," Xhaka stated.

At the time of the offense, Xhaka was playing for Arsenal. He had previously tested positive for COVID-19 in September 2022, which led to his absence from Switzerland's matches that month. The midfielder's admission has led to his immediate exclusion from the national team.
