The Sultan of Brunei has stripped one of his daughters-in-law of all royal titles following accusations of disrespect and conduct deemed “unbecoming” of the royal family. Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah, 33, was targeted by a royal command from Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 80, the world’s longest-reigning living monarch, according to national broadcaster RTB News.
The specific actions that led to the revocation of titles were not detailed in the announcement from the Office of the Grand Chamberlain. The palace confirmed that while Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah's titles were removed, those of her four children with Prince Abdul Malik remain unaffected.
Prince Abdul Malik, fourth in line to the throne, married Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah in 2015. Their wedding was marked by a 10-day ceremony. The couple has four children: Princess Muthee’ah, 10; Princess Fathiyyah, eight; Princess Khaalishah, six; and Princess Nabeelah, 16 months.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has held the positions of both sultan and prime minister of Brunei since the nation gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1984. The Sultan has previously faced international criticism, notably for his stance on the death penalty for same-sex relations and adultery, which drew protests from figures like George Clooney and Elton John.
