The second season of Apple TV+'s "Sugar" concluded on August 7 with a finale that resolved one case while introducing a complex new threat involving the protagonist's sister, Djen.

In the Season 2 finale, John Sugar (Colin Farrell) kills Lieutenant Vega and the FBI apprehends other individuals involved in the "Fire Sale." While Sugar had planned to pursue a relationship with Charlotte (Laura Donnelly), it was revealed that Charlotte had prior knowledge of Sugar's true nature and was working for his sister, Djen.

Sugar learns that Djen is alive and has developed technology capable of manipulating weather. She has presented this technology to a group of elite humans as a solution to global warming. However, Djen confides in Sugar that her intentions are to use the technology for personal gain, a revelation that deeply disturbs him.

"There’s something nefarious at play, and it terrifies him," Farrell told Decider. "Because he knows how powerful she is, and he knows how bright she is, and brilliant she is. But something changed. There’s a darkness that’s fallen over her that he doesn’t quite understand."

Showrunner Sam Catlin elaborated on Djen's character, describing her as someone with power and agency who might have orchestrated events. "What if she actually has more than agency? Maybe she set up the whole thing, and she’s quite powerful and a cautionary tale for Sugar going forward," Catlin said. He added that Djen's ambition and greed could present significant challenges for Sugar in future seasons.

The finale also impacted Sugar's relationship with Charlotte. Her betrayal leaves him questioning the authenticity of their romance. Donnelly explained that Charlotte's feelings for Sugar were genuine, creating a complicated situation as she believed she was acting in accordance with Djen's plan for the world.

"For her, the hope that she managed to continue was that maybe he would want to come on board," Donnelly said. "Because I think she also does genuinely believe that she’s doing the right thing following Djen’s plan for the world."

While Apple TV+ has not yet officially renewed "Sugar" for a third season, Farrell and Catlin expressed interest in exploring Sugar's evolving relationship with Djen and Charlotte's potential return. Farrell also noted the enjoyment of portraying a more romantic side of Sugar, describing the experience as "intoxicating, euphoric, confounding, nerve-wracking."

"Sugar" Season 2 is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
