Daniel Leonard, the 25-year-old son of boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, was arrested earlier this summer on multiple drug possession charges, according to Santa Monica Police.
An officer observed Daniel Leonard and another individual with a nitrous oxide tank and a balloon in the early morning hours of July 7. When approached by the officer, one man attempted to conceal the balloon while the other hid the nitrous oxide tank. Both individuals were detained, and the container was confirmed to be a nitrous oxide tank.
The pair was initially arrested for possession of nitrous oxide with intent to inhale. Daniel Leonard was subsequently charged with possession of methamphetamine and sedatives/benzodiazepines. In total, he faces four misdemeanor charges for possession of nitrous oxide, a substance containing nitrous oxide, MDMA, alprazolam, and dextroamphetamine. He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 12.
This arrest marks the latest in a series of troubles for Daniel Leonard. In May, he was arrested for violating a restraining order at the family home, though that order was later dropped. According to reports, a "violent" incident involving Daniel and his father prompted Sugar Ray Leonard to file the initial protective order. In court documents, Sugar Ray Leonard described his son as an addict and thief, stating that Daniel had overdosed four times and had been stealing daily for years. The former boxing champion expressed concern for his own safety and that of his wife and daughter due to his son's behavior.
Daniel Leonard is the youngest son of Sugar Ray Leonard and his second wife, Bernadette Robi. Sugar Ray Leonard, 70, is a former five-division world champion and Olympic gold medalist.
