Subaru is recalling 541,237 vehicles across multiple models due to misprinted Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) labels, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The incorrect GAWR on the federally required certification labels could pose a safety risk by potentially leading owners to overload the vehicle's rear axle.

The recall affects model years 2019 through 2026 Subaru Ascent, 2025 and 2026 Subaru Forester and Forester Hybrid, and 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. NHTSA documents indicate that an estimated 100% of the affected vehicles have the labeling issue.

Specifically, the recall covers:

  • 2019-2026 Subaru Ascent (383,800 vehicles)
  • 2025-2026 Subaru Forester (49,849 vehicles)
  • 2025-2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid (77,504 vehicles)
  • 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (29,297 vehicles)

Subaru stated that the incorrect label might suggest a higher weight capacity than the axle can safely support. Overloading an axle can compromise vehicle handling and potentially lead to tire failure. The recall documents do not specify the exact discrepancy between the printed and correct GAWR values.

Owners of affected vehicles do not need to take immediate action. Subaru will mail corrected GAWR labels to owners, which they can then apply over the existing incorrect label. Alternatively, customers can have a dealership install the corrected label at no cost.

NHTSA will be mailing notification letters to affected owners beginning August 25, with a follow-up notice to be sent once the remedy is available. The corrected labels are expected to be mailed out in January 2027.

This is Subaru's second significant recall in 2026. The automaker previously recalled nearly 70,000 models due to a risk of fuel leaks that could cause fires. That recall, affecting 2025 Forester Hybrid and 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid models, involved a faulty fuel filler cap gasket that could lead to pressure buildup when the fuel tank was nearly full, especially in high temperatures. For that issue, dealerships replaced the fuel filler cap gasket free of charge, and owners were advised to park outdoors and keep fuel tanks below 50% capacity until repairs were made.
