Study Finds Short, Slow Runs Boost Cognitive Function and Mood

A recent study suggests that even a brief period of slow running can significantly improve cognitive functions and mood. Researchers found that ten minutes of jogging at a pace just above walking speed can lead to faster thinking and a happier disposition.

While previous studies have highlighted the cognitive benefits of moderate-intensity exercise, this new research indicates that similar advantages can be achieved with very light physical activity. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Tsukuba in Japan, involved 24 healthy young adults.

Participants were asked to run on a treadmill for ten minutes at a speed ranging from 3 to 6 kilometers per hour (approximately 2 to 4 miles per hour). This intensity level corresponds to about 35 percent of their peak oxygen uptake. A control session with no exercise was also included to allow for comparison of brain activity and performance.

Using a device that monitors changes in oxygen-rich blood flow, researchers measured activity in the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain responsible for executive functions like thinking, emotional regulation, and behavior. Following the slow jogging sessions, an increase in activity was observed in these prefrontal regions.

Cognitive function was assessed using the Stroop effect, which measures the delay in reaction time when identifying the color of ink used to write a word, especially when the word itself spells out a different color. For instance, the word 'red' written in blue ink. The study revealed that after the slow runs, participants exhibited a shorter Stroop interference time, indicating enhanced brain processing speed.

Furthermore, participants reported feeling happier after the exercise. The researchers noted a potential link between the head's vertical movement during slow running and improvements in mood, suggesting this could be a key mechanism. The study authors concluded that these findings support the idea that very slow running can contribute to mental well-being and encourage individuals to remain physically and mentally active.
