Hattie Cooke, a 20-year-old student at the London College of Fashion, has transformed her wardrobe into a revenue stream, earning up to £4,500 per month by selling clothes on the resale platform Vinted.
Cooke, who initially began selling clothes on Vinted as a hobby to supplement her student income, found her venture became more lucrative when she moved to London in 2024. As a fashion student, she frequently purchased clothing from vintage shops to experiment with her style. She discovered that Vinted provided an efficient way to recoup costs, often selling items for more than she paid for them.
"It was easy cash and a lot of the time I found that I was selling the items for more than I was buying them," Cooke stated. She describes her Vinted activity as creating a "revolving wardrobe," allowing her to adapt her style with seasonal trends and personal preferences without relying on fast fashion.
Cooke specializes in 'Y2K' or 2000s-era fashion, sourcing items from London vintage stores. She recently purchased 50 vintage denim skirts for £50, anticipating a profit as each skirt could be sold for more than £1. To date, she has earned nearly £10,000 through the platform.
"I honestly never thought that it could be a full-time thing. It’s crazy how much money you can make from home," she said.
Cooke outlined seven tips for aspiring sellers on Vinted:
Presentation Matters: Cooke suggests that the background used for photographs impacts sales. She uses her leopard-print bedding, believing it complements the aesthetic of the clothing she sells.
Strategic Timing: Listing items between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, shortly after typical work hours, and on Sundays, tends to yield the best results, according to Cooke.
Keywords and Hashtags: Employing relevant keywords and hashtags, such as 'Y2K,' '2000s,' or celebrity names associated with a style, can enhance an item's visibility within the platform's algorithm.
Consistent Uploads: Maintaining a regular schedule for uploading new items is crucial for consistent sales. Cooke noted experiencing "dry spells" in sales when she did not upload consistently.
Detailed Measurements: Including specific garment measurements, such as waist and bust, can expedite sales and reduce the need for buyers to inquire for more information.
Optimized Pricing: Cooke recommends setting an initial price slightly higher than the desired selling point to allow for negotiation and make buyers feel they are securing a bargain.
Efficient Shipping: Prompt shipping, ideally on the same day or the day after a sale, encourages repeat business by establishing the seller as reliable and efficient.
