Student Stabs Teacher After Math Exam Grade in Brazil

A harrowing incident occurred on September 11 at Dr. Gerson dos Santos State School in Cametá, Pará, Brazil, where a 17-year-old student attacked her teacher, Betânia de Almeida, with a hunting knife. The assault was captured on video and occurred shortly after the student's mathematics exam had been graded.

The footage shows the student standing near de Almeida's desk before producing the knife and lunging at the educator. De Almeida narrowly avoided the initial strike and struggled with the student, attempting to disarm her. During the scuffle, the teacher sustained a stab wound. The student then pursued de Almeida out of the classroom.

Authorities reported that the 11th-grade student told officers she attacked de Almeida because she disliked her. The student was apprehended at the scene. De Almeida was transported to Cametá Regional Hospital, where she received stitches for the wound and was later discharged. A CT scan confirmed that her organs were not affected.

A family member informed the Brazilian news outlet G1 that the attack happened shortly after de Almeida had finished grading the student's exam. \n\n\nAccording to Cametá-based lawyer Thays Cruz, the minor is not considered criminally liable due to her age and will face a "socio-educational measure" under Brazil's Statute of the Child and Adolescent, which is comparable to attempted homicide. Cruz suggested that confinement could be a potential outcome given the severity of the incident.\n\n\nThe Union of Public Education Workers of Pará condemned the attack and called for a thorough investigation by law enforcement.
