A 23-year-old student police officer with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been arrested on suspicion of rape and kidnapping. The recruit was detained on Saturday while off duty in West Yorkshire following a pursuit on the M62.
GMP received a 999 call shortly before 10:20 p.m. in which a woman could be heard in distress from a vehicle in the Manchester area. Officers traced the suspect's vehicle, leading to the arrest of the student officer on suspicion of rape, kidnap, and dangerous driving.
The officer, who has since been suspended, is in custody for questioning. Specialist officers are supporting the complainant, a woman in her 20s.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Dexter stated that the incident is deeply concerning and under full investigation. He committed to working with the Crown Prosecution Service to bring the case to court and to accelerate misconduct proceedings. Dexter added that GMP's Professional Standards Directorate conducted an initial review of the officer's vetting, which found no prior cause for concern, but emphasized this does not diminish the seriousness of the allegations.
The matter has been referred by GMP to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
