Student Loan Autopay Discount Extended Through End of 2026
Nearly 2 million borrowers have enrolled in a program offering a 1% interest rate reduction for automatic loan payments.
The U.S. Department of Education has extended the enrollment period for a 1% interest rate discount on federal student loans for borrowers who sign up for automatic payments. The program, initially set to end September 30, 2026, will now continue through December 31, 2026, due to its success.
Nearly 2 million borrowers have already enrolled in the autopay program, which was announced in June 2026. Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent stated in a press release that the initiative is increasing repayment rates and improving the health of the federal student loan portfolio. This extension provides an additional three months for borrowers to take advantage of the savings.
Enrolling in autopay not only offers a direct reduction in interest but also helps borrowers maintain eligibility for other repayment assistance and forgiveness programs. These include the new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), which went into effect July 1, 2026, and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, both of which require consistent, on-time payments. The RAP program is designed for lower-income borrowers, with provisions to reduce interest accrual and ensure principal reduction with each payment. If a borrower's monthly payment is less than the accrued interest, the government waives the difference, preventing negative amortization, where the loan balance grows despite payments.
Maintaining Loan Health
The RAP program also includes a government-matched principal reduction of up to $50 per month. However, missing a single payment can jeopardize progress. Experts caution that missed payments can lead to interest capitalization and negative amortization, significantly increasing debt. Defaulting on loans can also severely damage a borrower's credit score for years.
Setting up autopay for federal student loans is a process managed through individual loan servicers' official portals. Borrowers must log in, navigate to billing or payment settings, and provide bank routing and account numbers to link their bank accounts. A preferred monthly withdrawal date can be selected, or it may default to the existing payment deadline. It is crucial for borrowers to confirm the agreement and ensure sufficient funds are available in their linked bank accounts each month to avoid overdraft fees and maintain the integrity of the automatic payments.
Most federal loan servicers offer an immediate 0.25 percentage point interest rate reduction once the first automatic payment is successfully processed. Borrowers are advised to continue making manual payments until they receive official confirmation that their autopay status is active to prevent any gaps in payment.
Addressing Defaulted Loans
Borrowers with defaulted loans can still enroll in the autopay program to receive the 1% discount. This requires consolidating eligible loans through the studentaid.gov portal. After logging in with an FSA ID, borrowers select loans for consolidation, choose a federal loan servicer, and select a repayment plan, such as RAP. Once the consolidation is complete, borrowers will have a single monthly payment with a fixed interest rate based on the weighted average of their previous loans. This process also allows them to become eligible for the autopay discount moving forward.
