Student Driver Receives Suspended Sentence for Dangerous Driving Causing Serious Injury

A 19-year-old student, Jonah Neal, has been sentenced to a suspended jail term after admitting to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The incident occurred in November 2025 when Neal, driving his Nissan Leaf, lost control on the A44 near Aberystwyth, Wales, while en route to a football match.

Dashcam footage captured Neal's vehicle veering erratically around a bend behind two motorbikes before entering the oncoming lane and colliding head-on with another car. The prosecutor described the conditions at the time as "dark with light rain." The victim, who was driving home from work, suffered multiple severe injuries, including a broken pelvis, breastbone, ankle, vertebrae, and ribs. He required five metal plates to be inserted into an open leg fracture.

The victim's next memory after the crash was waking up in his wrecked vehicle amid airbag deployment and dust, with Neal appearing at his window to apologize. Prosecutors noted that the victim's survival with non-fatal injuries was a matter of "good fortune and nothing else."

Neal, who had passed his driving test just thirteen months prior to the crash, had been driving "faster than he realised" when he braked hard behind the motorbikes. His defense argued the accident stemmed more from inexperience than irresponsibility. The crash impacted Neal's academic plans, forcing him to forgo a place at Maastricht University for economics at Cardiff University.

At Swansea Crown Court, Neal received a 12-month detention sentence, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work. He has also been disqualified from driving for two years and must pass an extended test before he can be relicensed.
