Student Dies After Falling From Fourth Floor at LA High School Following Classroom Fight

A student at Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles died Wednesday after falling from the fourth floor of a campus building, a tragedy that followed a classroom fight captured on video.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. as students were leaving for lunch. Los Angeles Police Department officials confirmed the deceased was a teenage boy but have not released his identity out of respect for the community and in accordance with privacy laws, according to a statement from Principal Marine Davtyan.

A death investigation has been opened to determine the events leading up to the fall, though police have stated that no foul play was involved.

Video footage from inside the classroom shows two students engaged in a fight while a teacher attempts to intervene. One of the students is seen being knocked to the floor before fleeing the classroom. Witnesses reported that the same student ran out of the classroom and subsequently fell over a fourth-floor railing. Students reportedly heard a loud 'thump' before being ushered back inside their classrooms.

Classmates expressed shock and concern over the incident. "It's sad because someone died today. It's just terrible," said Chance Pedroza, a classmate. Another student questioned the safety of the school environment, stating, "Kind of shaken up because this is a school I’m supposed to be safe at. With this happening, it’s like, what are they going to do next to prevent it from happening again."

The school was placed on lockdown during the initial investigation of the "medical emergency." Parents waited outside for hours until students were released at 4 p.m.

"I’m a parent. I love my kids. I know the parents love their child. Nobody expects to take their kid to school and not come back to pick them up and take them home. That’s heartbreaking," said Cynthia Solorzano, a parent of a student at the school.

Since the incident, a memorial was started outside the school in honor of the tragedy. Classmates, family, and friends placed flowers and candles in remembrance

Flowers and candles have been placed at the school by classmates, family, and friends to memorialize the student.

Principal Davtyan stated that the well-being of the school community is the top priority and that school mental health professionals and support staff will be available to provide counseling. She encouraged families to check in with their children and seek support if needed, assuring that the school can be reached directly for assistance.
