Student Charged as Felony Assault Follows Brutal Middle School Attack Caught on Video

A shocking video has emerged showing an 11-year-old girl being severely beaten by a classmate in the cafeteria of Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach, Florida. The assault, which occurred late last month, resulted in the victim being diagnosed with a concussion and experiencing significant fear about returning to school.

The graphic footage depicts the young girl being dragged to the floor and repeatedly punched in the face by another student while bystanders recorded the incident. The victim's mother described the attack, stating, "She was struck over 40 times before anybody intervened." She expressed deep distress, saying, "I was just grateful that she was alive."

An attorney representing the victim accused the school of failing to ensure her safety, alleging that school officials had prior knowledge of an "imminent attack." Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials, however, stated that staff members had met with both students prior to the incident in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. School police responded after being alerted to the altercation.

"The matter was addressed in accordance with the code of student conduct and referred to law enforcement," a statement from the school district said.

Initially, the case was referred to the juvenile diversion program for a misdemeanor battery charge. However, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office later filed a second-degree felony aggravated battery charge after the victim’s mother requested prosecution and investigators considered the extent of the girl's injuries. The identity of the charged student has not been released due to her age.

The victim's mother shared the emotional toll the incident has taken, remarking, "Every single day has been difficult, But I put on a face because I still have to show up for her." She added, "We have a problem with school violence and bullying that has to stop."

An arraignment hearing in juvenile court is scheduled for Thursday.
