Student Attacked, Robbed in Atlanta While Bystanders Watched

A Georgia State University student, identified as Amaris, was followed, assaulted, and robbed on a street in Atlanta's Midtown neighborhood on Saturday. The assailant, described as a man approximately six feet tall, claimed to have a gun and demanded her purse and phone at a crosswalk on 10th Street and West Peachtree Street.

Amaris resisted, leading to a physical struggle. During the altercation, her purse was flung, causing her to fall to the pavement. The man then repeatedly punched her as they wrestled for her belongings. Throughout the attack, multiple bystanders were observed watching the events unfold. No one reportedly intervened until after the man fled.

The assailant managed to steal Amaris's phone and driver's license before running northbound on West Peachtree Street. Amaris's family is tracking the phone and has reported the incident to the Atlanta Police Department. Responding paramedics and police arrived at the scene at 1:54 p.m.

Amaris was taken to the hospital for evaluation and reported injuries including bruises on her back, ankle, and leg, which made it difficult to walk. Police have described the suspect as a man wearing a light-blue patterned hoodie, dark pants, and grey sneakers with white soles. They have not yet identified him.

Following the incident, Amaris expressed that she no longer plans to use MARTA, the public transit system she relied on daily, and intends to purchase a car. She recounted feeling vulnerable and targeted, stating, "Just the fact that you can be stalked and pinpointed like that, with all these other people on the street." She described the incident as "trifling."

The attack has drawn reactions online, with some expressing shock at the bystanders' inaction, while others suggested fear might have prevented intervention. The phenomenon of the bystander effect, where the presence of others decreases the likelihood of intervention, has been cited in discussions surrounding the event. Amaris, however, stated she does not fault the onlookers, expressing gratitude for having "made it out alive."
