Benjamin Day, 20, has admitted to the murder of sex worker Maria Saceanu, 24, in an Airbnb rented for £40 a night in Tividale, West Midlands. Day, a forensic sciences student, pleaded guilty on the second day of his trial, having been expected to claim self-defense.

Day was arrested in a hospital bed after calling emergency services for his injured hand. Footage released by West Midlands Police shows officers questioning Day, who was wearing a green khaki long-sleeved shirt similar to the one worn by the titular character in the U.S. crime drama 'Dexter.' He initially claimed he was bitten by a wild dog while dismembering Ms. Saceanu's body. "Your story doesn't quite check out? So where did it actually happen?" one officer asked, to which Day responded angrily, "I said I don't know."

He appeared to smirk as officers examined his injured hand, which he had wrapped in gaffer tape. When asked about the tape, he claimed he bought it and it was in his car, but could not recall where he parked.

Prosecutors stated that Day was "fascinated" with 'Dexter,' which features a forensic technician who secretly works as a vigilante serial killer. Day had prepared the Airbnb room, lining it with plastic sheeting, as a "tribute" to the show, intending to film content for TikTok. The prosecution argued his actions were those of a copycat.

Ms. Saceanu met Day at the Airbnb on December 20 after responding to his text message. He had been preparing the room since 5:30 p.m. and killed her shortly after her arrival. A guest in another room alerted the landlord after noticing a trail of blood, leading to police being called.

A Home Office pathologist determined that Ms. Saceanu likely died from wounds to her neck, with additional wounds to her hands indicating defensive actions.

Day, who was 19 at the time of the killing, is the son of a company director. He was remanded into custody pending psychiatric assessments. The case is adjourned for further evaluation.
