Benjamin William Day, 20, admitted to murdering 24-year-old Maria Saceanu at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Tuesday. The plea came on the second day of his trial.
Prosecutors stated that Day had meticulously planned the murder, preparing a room with plastic sheeting and other items to facilitate the killing and the disposal of evidence. Day, who was 19 at the time of the incident, had initially been expected to claim self-defense and that the room was prepared for a TikTok tribute to the television series 'Dexter'.
Day, an undergraduate at the University of Worcester, entered his guilty plea after a delay in proceedings, reportedly with a smirk. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled for sentencing on December 4.
Day's obsession with the US television drama, which features a forensic scientist who moonlights as a vigilante killer, appears to have played a significant role in the case. The show's protagonist, Dexter Morgan, is known for his methodical approach to murder and dismemberment, often in a room prepared to contain the mess and prevent detection.
The circumstances of the murder, including the preparation of the "kill room," have drawn parallels to the fictional crimes depicted in the series. This case highlights concerns about the influence of media on individuals, particularly when combined with obsessive behavior.
Day, who resided at Yeadon Close in Redditch, Worcestershire, will face sentencing for his crime, with the court awaiting the full details of the case as it moves toward final judgment.
