Strictly Come Dancing Weighs Host Lineup Changes Amidst Criticism
BBC bosses are reportedly considering alterations to the hosting team of 'Strictly Come Dancing' after only one series, citing concerns over show format and audience reception.
BBC executives are reportedly planning significant changes to the hosting lineup of 'Strictly Come Dancing' following a single series featuring presenter Emma Willis, comedian Josh Widdicombe, and professional dancer Johannes Radebe. Initial assessments of the trio, who were intended to usher in a new era for the popular BBC One dance competition, have led to discussions about altering the show's presentation for the upcoming season.
Sources suggest that senior figures within the BBC acknowledge the show has become the subject of widespread jokes and is perceived as a 'laughing stock.' There is internal discussion about whether the chosen hosts were the right fit and if the decision to have three anchors was a strategic error. "When Emma, Josh and Johannes entered that room, they were seen to be the dream," a BBC insider stated. "Those at the BBC who didn't see them were shocked and didn't believe it could work. That view stands, it doesn't work."
The current broadcast series has reportedly seen a decline in viewership among traditional audiences, with criticisms focusing on the hosts' chemistry and perceived lack of experience. Widdicombe has been noted for appearing to struggle alongside Willis, while Radebe has faced criticism for timing errors during broadcasts. "Emma is a very experienced presenter but Josh looks like he's hanging around her like an uncool boy at school and she doesn't want him near her," the source added. "It should be slicker, in the view of many at the top of the BBC, so there are changes afoot."
Industry figures are reportedly being consulted about potential changes for the next season. One proposal being considered is the possibility of Radebe joining the judging panel, as the contracts for the current judges—Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Anton du Beke, and Motsi Mabuse—are set to expire at the end of this series. Willis, who also presents ITV's 'The Voice,' is expected to remain with the show, while Widdicombe's future appears uncertain.
The program's contestant lineup this season has also drawn criticism, with accusations that the BBC is prioritizing younger viewers over its established audience.
A BBC spokesperson, however, has dismissed reports of upcoming changes as "pure and utter speculation."
