Strictly Come Dancing Unveils New Hosts and Celebrity Cast for Upcoming Season

Strictly Come Dancing is set to premiere its latest season, introducing a new trio of hosts and a diverse cast of celebrities eager to hit the dance floor. The launch show, offering a first glimpse of the upcoming season, will feature the debut of hosts Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and former professional dancer Johannes Radebe.

The BBC competition is undergoing a significant overhaul for its 24th series, which includes changes to its hosting lineup following the departures of longtime presenters Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly. The new presenting team aims to bring the show into the social media era, a strategy that has also influenced the selection of celebrity contestants.

This year's celebrity cast includes a mix of personalities from television, sports, and social media. Notable participants are Love Island winner Dani Dyer, EastEnders actress Lacey Turner, Gavin and Stacey star Melanie Walters, Australian singer Delta Goodrem, Big Brother host Will Best, and celebrity hairdresser Chris Appleton. Also joining the lineup are actress Jaime Winstone, former footballer Shaun Wright-Phillips, Olympians Dame Sarah Storey and Tabby Stoecker, Love Island winner Cach Mercer, House of the Dragon star Bethany Antonia, dog behaviorist Graeme Hall, Emmerdale actor Lawrence Robb, and YouTube personality John Nellis.

The launch show will not only introduce the hosts but also feature a group performance by five new professional dancers: Lethabo Monametsi, Mark Karmalita, Maddie Ingoldsby, Aleksandra Isaeva, and Cristian Priori. The celebrities will discover their professional partners during the launch episode, with the first live show scheduled for September 26.

New host Josh Widdicombe expressed his nerves ahead of the premiere, stating that he has been anticipating the show's airing. "It's nerve-wracking, we've been waiting for so long to do this. I've been living in a ball of fear," he said. Radebe, who transitions from a professional dancer to a co-presenter, acknowledged the demanding nature of the routines, admitting he was glad to have changed roles but also felt a sense of "fomo" (fear of missing out).

A notable change this season is the method by which celebrity-contestant pairings are revealed. Instead of a traditional announcement, partners will be discovered during a dance routine. Emma Willis explained that the celebrities will participate in a complex dance involving quick partner changes across three groups of five.

Reports indicate that professional dancer Neil Jones will not have a celebrity partner this season, reportedly due to an injury sustained during rehearsals. This follows an ongoing trend where some celebrities are noted to have prior dance experience, leading to accusations of the show being "fixed." Approximately 60% of this year's 15 contestants are said to have previous dance or performance backgrounds.

The show's strategy to engage younger audiences mirrors that of its U.S. counterpart, "Dancing With The Stars," which has successfully leveraged contestants' social media followings. Celebrities like Chris Appleton, with 4 million Instagram followers, and John Nellis, a sports YouTuber with over 15 million subscribers, align with this approach. This focus on social media presence has also been cited as a reason for the departure of some professional dancers who had smaller online followings, while those with larger followings, such as Dianne Buswell, have retained their places.

Insiders suggest that attracting major celebrities has become more challenging due to changes in the entertainment industry, with social media stars now holding significant influence. The BBC hopes that by incorporating personalities with large digital footprints, they can increase viewership among younger demographics, as evidenced by "Dancing With The Stars'" successful implementation of initiatives like TikTok Night.

The judging panel, comprising Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke, will return to evaluate the celebrity couples. Strictly Come Dancing is scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 19th, at 7:25 p.m. on BBC One.
