Strictly Come Dancing Judge Shirley Ballas Faces Accusations of Bias
The head judge's comments on Movie Night have drawn criticism from viewers alleging favoritism towards male professional dancers.
Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas has ignited a debate among viewers, with accusations of bias and favoritism surfacing after her comments during the show's Movie Night episode. Fans took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice their opinions, with many claiming Ballas consistently favors male professional dancers.
The controversy arose during the performance of Melanie Walters and her professional partner Aljaz Skorjanec, who performed a Waltz to 'Edelweiss' from The Sound of Music. Despite receiving a score of 15, placing them at the bottom of the leaderboard, Ballas offered some praise to Skorjanec while delivering critiques to Walters.
When fellow judge Anton Du Beke scoffed at her remarks, Ballas responded, "Hold on a minute, I'm trying to help her because she's going to have lots of other ballroom dances and she's dancing with the best ballroom dancer." While Skorjanec smiled, viewers interpreted this as a subtle jab at other professional dancers.
Comments on X included sentiments such as "The male dancer bias from Shirley never goes away does it," and "Shirley hyping her and the bbcs favourites once more, another year same bullsh*t." Some viewers also suggested a perceived jealousy towards younger women and a preference for younger male dancers.
Amidst these discussions, another point of contention arose regarding the show's judging panel and presenting team. Viewers have noted a perceived tension between judge Motsi Mabuse and presenter Josh Widdicombe. Following a first live show where Widdicombe was described by some viewers as a "spare part," the dynamic between Mabuse and Widdicombe has come under scrutiny.
Fans on X observed that Mabuse appeared to be losing patience with Widdicombe's interruptions and jokes during feedback sessions. Comments included "Motsi just can’t hide her contempt for Josh #Strictly" and "Motsi is just like me fr. She’s over Josh already too #strictly."
Despite these on-screen observations, Mabuse has publicly supported the show's presenting line-up, which includes Emma Willis and Johannes Radebe alongside Widdicombe. She recently posted on Threads, urging appreciation for "imperfectly human" television personalities and suggesting that artificial intelligence could eventually replace them. She stated, "While people type away, tearing apart real human beings on television, real emotions!!!!!!! AI is getting better at replacing them. One day we might not even know the difference. And maybe then we'll miss the days when television was still beautifully, imperfectly human."
In terms of performance, Australian singer Delta Goodrem and her partner Kai Widdrington are currently leading the combined leaderboard with 59 points after two weeks of competition. The second week of Strictly Come Dancing featured celebrities performing routines from various films as part of the popular Movie Week theme.
