Viewers call for a return to traditional elements of the BBC's hit dance competition amid a series of recent alterations.
Strictly Come Dancing enthusiasts are urging producers to revert to the show's established format, citing dissatisfaction with recent changes implemented ahead of the latest live broadcast. This season has already seen alterations to its presenting team and the roster of professional dancers, with a new approach to revealing the weekly song and dance assignments drawing particular criticism.
Traditionally, each celebrity-professional pairing would receive an individual video announcing their assigned dance and music, a reveal that typically occurred on Tuesdays. However, the current season introduced a change where this announcement was made on a Friday via a group video shared on Instagram. This shift has prompted numerous comments from viewers on social media expressing a preference for the previous method.
Fans have voiced their opinions, with comments such as, "I hope next week it is back to the nice little video with what dance and song on a Tuesday!! Please!!!" and "I miss the old way of announcing the dances." Another viewer stated, "From next week could we please go back to the normal way," while others pleaded, "Pretty please can we have the normal tunes on Tuesday reel next week thank you sooo much <3" and "Can we at least keep the normal song reveal format we have enough change already."
The BBC's decision to deviate from the show's well-established formula, including a new presenting trio and a revamped partner selection process, has not been met with universal approval. Initial overnight ratings for the pre-recorded launch show showed a slight increase to 5.8 million viewers, up from last year's peak of 5.6 million. However, the average viewership for the episode settled at 5.3 million, a decrease from the previous year's 5.4 million.
The new hosting lineup, featuring Josh Widdicombe, Emma Willis, and Johannes Radebe, has also been a point of discussion among viewers. While Emma Willis has received praise, some fans have questioned the necessity of having three presenters and expressed a preference for the return of former hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman. Comments on X included queries like, "I can't understand why we need 3 presenters???" and "Why does it need 3 presenters? It just doesn't work."
