Strangers Rally to Support Elderly Texas Delivery Driver Working to Fund Wife's Cancer Treatment

An 81-year-old delivery driver in Texas, Don Johnson, has become the focus of a significant community effort after a video surfaced showing him struggling to carry heavy luggage up a flight of stairs. Johnson has been working 14-hour days as an independent contractor delivering lost luggage to help cover the escalating medical expenses for his wife, Josephine, who is battling an aggressive form of cancer.

The situation came to light when Erin Howell, a Dallas-Fort Worth resident, reviewed her home security footage and saw Johnson laboring with her recently recovered luggage. "It completely broke my heart to see a man of his age doing such intense, grueling physical labor," Howell stated in a GoFundMe post. "The reality is that he isn’t working by choice; he is working for survival."

Johnson has been in this delivery role for three years, a decision prompted by his wife's diagnosis. The couple, married for 57 years, moved in with their daughter to help manage Josephine's care, but the mounting costs of medical treatments and prescriptions necessitated Johnson finding work. He explained that this was the only job that would hire him, having been turned down by other potential employers.

"With the increase in groceries and expenses and everything, we were just getting by," Johnson told NBC5 Dallas-Fort Worth. "I tried Amazon and Walmart and other places. It was either not the right moment, or they just passed on me."

The demanding nature of the job has taken a toll, with Johnson driving hundreds of miles daily, accumulating over 200,000 miles on his vehicle, which has led to significant mechanical issues.

Moved by Johnson's plight, Howell initiated a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $300,000. She emphasized that he should not have to bear such a heavy burden alone. "Every single dollar raised from this campaign will go directly to helping them survive this crisis," she wrote.

The crowdfunding effort has garnered substantial support, raising over $244,000 as of September 2. The outpouring of generosity has provided Johnson with relief, expressing his hope that he can now stop working. "I think I’m going to be able to stop working, and that’s amazing," he told KDFW. "So we’re not quite totally over the hump yet, but we’re getting there very quickly."

Josephine has also expressed renewed hope and strength, stating, "I can face it. I think that’s the big difference." She finds comfort in the messages and prayers from supporters, describing the feeling as "joyful."
