Strangers Form Human Chain to Rescue Dog from Manchester Canal
A group of passersby in Ancoats, Manchester, demonstrated remarkable teamwork to save a dog that had fallen into a canal.
A dog named Sumak was pulled to safety from a canal in Ancoats, Manchester, thanks to the quick thinking and coordinated efforts of several strangers. The incident occurred on September 12 when Sumak fell down the steep, slippery walls of the canal while on a walk with its owner, Batu Akyol.
Mr. Akyol managed to keep Sumak afloat by holding onto the dog's lead but was unable to retrieve the animal from the water on his own. Fortunately, two students, Jack Spencer Furmston and Ben Camphor, were leaving a nearby coffee shop and noticed Mr. Akyol's distress. They immediately came to his aid.
As they attempted the rescue, four other passersby stopped upon witnessing the commotion. Together, the six individuals formed a human chain to effect the rescue. One man was lowered down the canal wall, held by the feet by the others, to reach the distressed dog. Images from the event show Sumak struggling to find purchase on the canal walls as the man was carefully lowered.
The rescuer was able to reach Sumak's collar and lift the dog most of the way up the wall. The rest of the group then assisted in lifting Sumak the final distance over the edge and to safety. The coordinated effort highlights a moment of spontaneous community action in response to an animal in peril.
