Stormy Weather Enhances, Not Ruins, Couple's Blackpool Wedding

A couple whose wedding day was affected by Storm Boelo found that last-minute adjustments due to the weather did not diminish their celebration, but rather enhanced it. Leigh and Paul Hutchinson had originally planned a surprise reception with champagne at the top of Blackpool Tower. However, high winds forced the closure of that area, prompting staff to arrange a private bar on the Tower Ballroom's upper balcony.

Later in the evening, the dance floor was cleared for the newlyweds' first dance. "They did something really special for us," Leigh Hutchinson said. "It made the day so much more than we could have ever imagined."

The couple, who met 10 years ago, had initially intended a small wedding ceremony followed by a family meal. "So it spiralled to say the least," she added.

Following the ceremony, the wedding party walked along the Promenade amidst the storm. "I don't know how we made it! We caused quite a stir," Leigh recalled, noting that some umbrellas were lost in the wind. She later described the experience as "incredible."

When a guest suggested a dance in the Tower Ballroom, staff accommodated the request, playing the organ for the couple's first dance. "We were really overwhelmed with everyone's comments and cheers," Leigh said.

Paul Hutchinson joked that if he had known his first dance would be on the famous ballroom floor, he might have been more nervous. "I was nervous dancing in front of 40 people, never mind hundreds I didn't know, but it made the day," he said.

Rob Smith, general manager of Blackpool Tower, commented on the event. "It was a special moment and one our team will never forget," he stated. "The Tower Ballroom is one of the most famous venues in the world and Leigh and Paul are now part of its history."

The storm also caused other disruptions in the region, including a fishing boat coming loose from its moorings at Irvine Harbour in Ayrshire. Despite the adverse weather, the Hutchinsons' wedding day was marked by adaptability and joyful celebration. Bride and partner share their first dance on the vast polished wooden floor of Blackpool Tower Ballroom, captured from above with guests seated around the edge of the venue.
