Steven Van Zandt Lists Greenwich Village Penthouse for $19M
The E Street Band guitarist and 'Sopranos' actor has relisted his former church penthouse, nearly doubling its price from its initial offering.
Steven Van Zandt, the E Street Band guitarist and actor known for his role as Silvio Dante in "The Sopranos," has listed his Greenwich Village penthouse for $18.995 million. The duplex apartment is located in Novare, a boutique condominium conversion of a former church at 135 W. Fourth St., near Washington Square Park.
The property first appeared on the market in June for $15 million, making the current asking price a significant increase. Van Zandt and his wife, actress Maureen Van Zandt, purchased the penthouse in 2008 for $6 million. If sold at the current asking price, the sale would represent more than triple their initial investment.
The building, originally the Washington Square Methodist Church built in 1860, was redeveloped into eight residences by developer Flank in 2006. The conversion preserved original architectural elements, including stained glass windows and a 50-foot atrium.
Van Zandt's penthouse spans approximately 3,500 square feet and features 20-foot ceilings, exposed wooden rafters, and original church windows. The main living area includes a kitchen with a checkerboard backsplash and a folding glass wall that opens onto a 500-square-foot terrace equipped with an outdoor cooking setup. "This duplex has one of the most inspired outdoor spaces in the city," said Mark D. Friedman of Brown Harris Stevens, who is handling the sale along with Richard Rosenthal.
The upper level is described as a "party deck," while the lower level contains three bedrooms and three bathrooms. One of the bedrooms is currently configured as a media den, situated between two bedroom suites. The design incorporates salvaged church glass and offers space for a studio or additional lounge area.
Van Zandt, who joined Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band in 1975, has had a multifaceted career that includes acting, music, and documentary filmmaking. He is also the frontman for his band, the Disciples of Soul.
The building has previously attracted notable residents, including actor Jude Law, who reportedly rented a different penthouse in the same building. The Greenwich Village neighborhood has also seen recent high-profile real estate transactions, with musicians Pink and Gracie Abrams making significant property purchases in the area.
