Despite the Golden State Warriors' 0-3 start to the season, rookie Yaxel Lendeborg is making a notable impression. Following a 131-122 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday, Head Coach Steve Kerr addressed Lendeborg's performance, highlighting both his strengths and areas for growth.
Kerr praised Lendeborg for his aggressive approach and skill set, noting that the rookie "can dribble, pass and shoot." However, the coach also pointed to the learning curve associated with transitioning to the NBA. "The biggest thing is just continuing to learn the NBA," Kerr stated. "He’s gonna feel that; he’s gonna do that."
One specific play that Kerr reflected on involved Lendeborg launching himself at Khaman Maluach. "In college he could do that, but this is a different league," Kerr commented. "He’ll learn. He’s playing a ton, and he’s gonna get all these reps, and we’re gonna keep showing him film, and he’ll get better and better."
Lendeborg has demonstrated fearlessness on the court, including an exchange with Luka Doncic during his first career NBA game against the Los Angeles Lakers. After the game, Lendeborg stated he "lost all respect" for Doncic, citing perceived "whining and complaining."
This confrontation drew a positive reaction from teammate Draymond Green, who appreciated the rookie's willingness to stand up to a veteran player. Lendeborg later admitted he may have "went overboard" with his comments towards Doncic but stood by his actions, stating "it is what it is."
Lendeborg's strong summer league performance, where he led the Warriors to a championship and was named MVP, foreshadowed his potential impact. This season, he is averaging 34.3 minutes, 18.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
