Steve Hilton Highlights Los Angeles Homeless Crisis at MacArthur Park Campaign Stop

Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton visited Los Angeles' MacArthur Park on Tuesday, drawing attention to the city's homelessness and drug crisis.

Hilton toured the park and surrounding areas, focusing his criticism on taxpayer-funded nonprofits that provide clean drug supplies under what he described as "harm reduction" programs. He argued that these initiatives prolong addiction rather than aiding individuals in recovery.

"This is your tax money at work… Free crack pipes and needles being handed out to drug addicts. CEOs of these so-called ‘nonprofits’ making millions a year. The smell, the squalor, the inhumanity. All of it is funded by you," Hilton stated. He vowed, "They call it ‘harm reduction,’ but all it does is keep people addicted. I’ll end this madness."

During Hilton's visit, discarded needles, drug paraphernalia, and individuals sleeping on sidewalks were evident, painting a stark picture of the conditions. Images from the visit showed Hilton walking past a woman sleeping in an alley and speaking to reporters with another person visible on the sidewalk nearby.

Hilton has previously spoken about witnessing "crack pipes, injection drug use, and people folded over on fentanyl in the middle of a sunny day." A video clip that gained attention online during his visit showed a homeless man walking through the background with his pants down as Hilton discussed the area's issues.

The park visit occurred against a backdrop of Los Angeles' political landscape. The city's 15-seat council has no Republican members, and the city has not elected a Republican mayor since Richard Riordan in 1993. The state's last Republican governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, concluded his term in January 2011.

Hilton characterized the conditions, including piles of trash and human feces, as a "moral failure" and a "taxpayer-funded drug market." He is set to face Democrat Xavier Becerra in the gubernatorial election on November 3.
