Steve Berthiaume Departs as Diamondbacks Television Voice After 14 Years

Steve Berthiaume, who previously hosted shows like “SportsCenter” and “Baseball Tonight” for ESPN, is no longer the television play-by-play announcer for the Arizona Diamondbacks. His departure comes after a 14-year tenure with the franchise.

Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall confirmed the decision to the Arizona Republic, stating, “His contract is up and we felt it was a good time to step back and re-evaluate our broadcasts.” Hall added, “He was here 14 years and was a great DBack.”

Berthiaume expressed surprise and disappointment over the move. "As I told the Diamondbacks, I’m very appreciative to have had the opportunity to connect with our fan base these past 14 years," Berthiaume told the Republic. "I’ve always tried to put the club first. I enjoyed my Arizona experience and I’m grateful to all my friends and colleagues in our broadcast group."

He also noted his pride in the broadcast group's efforts to enhance production quality and expressed anticipation for future endeavors. "I’m looking forward to what’s next."

Berthiaume joined the Diamondbacks broadcast for the 2013 season, working alongside former manager Bob Brenly. He replaced Daron Sutton, who was removed from his role in June 2012 following a dispute over broadcast attire.

The team has not yet named a replacement for Berthiaume. Chris Garagiola, the Diamondbacks' radio play-by-play announcer, is considered a potential candidate. Garagiola is the son of former Diamondbacks GM Joe Garagiola Jr. and the grandson of the late Joe Garagiola Sr., a former MLB catcher and broadcaster.

Joe Garagiola (L) waves to fans in honor of his retirement, standing with Steve Berthiaume (r.) during the MLB game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field on April 14, 2013
