Sterlin English, known for his professional rodeo career, is taking on the role of Austin Lewis in the latest installment of Taylor Sheridan's universe, 'Dutton Ranch.' The character finds himself in a precarious situation as he investigates the disappearance of his friend Wes and the clandestine operations of the Jackson family.
English, who previously had guest roles on shows like 'Big Sky' and 'The Winchesters,' described Austin as being in a "scary spot" as he seeks answers. His quest for truth intensifies after his arm is broken by fellow ranch hand Chet Davis. Despite the physical threat, Austin remains resolute in his pursuit of what happened to Wes and the Jackson family's illicit dealings.
"Austin just really stands up for what he believes in. He has no backup in him. He doesn’t even really care what happens to him," English told Decider in an interview. "Austin might not be the biggest guy in the room, but he’s definitely not scared. That drive in him to find the truth is a really strong force."
Austin initially turns to Zachariah, a character he respects for his age and wisdom, for guidance. Zachariah, in turn, connects Austin with Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, who possess knowledge about the Jacksons' illegal cattle operation in Mexico. English noted that Austin is beginning to piece together the larger conspiracy but is still relying on others to confirm his suspicions.
English's own transition into acting was influenced by his father, John English, a cowboy who famously served as a double for Kiefer Sutherland in 'The Cowboy Way.' "I’ve always kind of wanted to be an actor," English said. "I kept taking a bunch of acting classes, and it led to a manager and agencies and all that."
Despite the dramatic turn in his character's storyline, English found support from his co-stars, including Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) and Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton). "They were so amazing," he recalled. "The whole crew was too. Between every take, they were checking in with me and encouraging me."
The actor also commented on the new attention he's receiving from his role, noting that fans at his father's team roping events have sought autographs and photos. "I love talking to everybody that has any questions," English said, while maintaining his promise not to spoil plot details.
