Actor Stephen Graham has revealed that his wife, Hannah Walters, made significant personal sacrifices, putting her own acting career on hold to support his professional aspirations and ensure financial stability for their family. Graham, 53, met Walters, 52, in the 1990s when they were both aspiring actors. However, with the arrival of their children, Grace and Alfie, the unpredictable nature of their careers prompted Walters to pursue a teaching position.
Speaking on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, Graham explained that Walters "kind of put her career on hold completely while I tried to pursue the acting." He added that she took up teaching, instructing sixth form students in A-level Drama and English, and also held other jobs to help sustain his acting career. "Ultimately that was a massive sacrifice and that's something I'm so grateful for because her ultimate aim and goal [was to be an actress] when she was younger," Graham stated. He expressed deep gratitude for her faith and support during those formative years.
Walters herself has spoken about her career choices, telling The i Paper in 2022 that she had always taken a "backseat" to allow Graham's career to flourish. She noted that when they were both starting out, it was necessary for one of them to secure a stable job, as acting income was inconsistent. "Acting doesn’t help pay the mortgage when you’re young," she explained.
The couple, who married in 2008, have worked together on several projects. They both appeared in the 2006 film This Is England and the 2021 prison drama Time, where Walters played Graham's on-screen wife. Graham suggested Walters for her role in Time, a decision she initially resisted, wanting to be cast based on her own merit rather than her husband's connection.
"I was quite cross when he suggested it," Walters confessed. "I want to get parts on my own merit and not – let’s be candid about it – because of Stephen." She insisted on going through the proper audition channels and secured the part independently.
Walters has also played a crucial role behind the scenes in many of Graham's projects through their joint production company, Matriarch Productions. Their collaboration led to the 2021 film Boiling Point, which received multiple BAFTA nominations. In this film, Walters served as an executive producer and also appeared on screen. Like other productions from their company, Boiling Point was filmed in a single, continuous take. Walters was also instrumental in developing their Disney+ boxing drama, A Thousand Blows, by presenting the concept to Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders.
The couple currently resides in Ibstock, Leicestershire, near Walters' family. They live in a four-bedroom semi-detached home valued at approximately £450,000.
