Actor Stephen Graham has shared that his wife, Hannah Walters, significantly put her own acting career on hold to support his ambitions. The couple, who met in the 1990s as trainee actors, decided that one of them needed a stable job to support their family when they had children, Grace and Alfie.

Walters, 52, became a teacher, instructing sixth form A-level Drama and English, alongside other roles, to ensure a steady income while Graham, 53, focused on his acting. "Hannah kind of put her career on hold completely while I tried to pursue the acting," Graham stated on The Romesh Ranganathan Show. He expressed deep gratitude for her sacrifice, noting that her ultimate goal had been to be an actress.

Graham and Walters married in 2008 and settled in Ibstock, Leicestershire. In a 2022 interview with The i Paper, Walters explained, "I’ve always kind of taken a little bit of a backseat. Stephen has had more of a prolific career, and when we were both starting out, one of us needed to get a normal job. Acting doesn’t help pay the mortgage when you’re young."

The couple has worked together on several projects, including the 2006 series This Is England and the 2021 prison drama Time, where Walters portrayed Graham's character's wife. Graham suggested Walters for the role in Time, a move she initially resisted, wanting to earn parts on her own merit. She underwent the proper channels for auditioning and secured the role independently.

Beyond acting, Walters has played a vital role in many of Graham's productions through their joint company, Matriarch Productions. This collaboration led to the 2021 film Boiling Point, for which Walters served as an executive producer and appeared on screen. The film, like episodes of Adolescence, was filmed in a single take. Walters was also instrumental in bringing their Disney+ boxing drama, A Thousand Blows, to fruition by presenting the concept to Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders.
