Stephen Graham's Near Miss: Wife Hannah Almost Moved to Spain for Another Man

Actor Stephen Graham has shared an intimate detail from his 33-year relationship with his wife, Hannah, revealing that she once planned to move to Spain to be with another man. The near-separation occurred after years of their relationship being defined as 'friends with benefits,' with Graham admitting to commitment issues in his youth.

The couple met as teenagers at theatre school. Graham, now 53, confessed that for the first five years of their relationship, he struggled with commitment and never took Hannah, 52, on a formal date. It was only when Hannah announced her intention to move to Spain to be with a man named Paco that Graham realized the depth of his feelings.

"She went to Spain and met this fella called Paco and said 'I'm going to move to Spain for Paco'," Graham recounted on the 'Table Manners' podcast. "So I was like, 'What do you mean?' and she said, 'I've met this fella called Paco and I'm going to go back and I'm going to live in Spain'."

In response, Graham asked Hannah if he could take her on a date. Their first date involved a trip to the cinema to see 'Saving Private Ryan' followed by a meal. As Hannah was due to leave for Spain in two days, Graham felt immense pressure to secure their future. Standing at New Cross Station, he told Hannah he loved her, a declaration she had reportedly waited five years to hear.

"I went, 'I love you', and she said 'I've been waiting five years for you to say that'," Graham recalled. Hannah ultimately did not move to Spain, and within three days of that pivotal conversation, the couple moved in together. Graham humorously added, but thankfully, added, "She never went to Spain and within three days we moved in together. Thankfully Paco packed off."

The couple, who married in 2008, have two children, Grace, 21, and Alfie, 19. Their relationship has seen them collaborate professionally, with Hannah having significantly sacrificed her own acting career to support Graham's aspirations, particularly after their children were born. She took on a teaching role to provide financial stability while Graham pursued his acting career. Graham has expressed deep gratitude for her sacrifices, acknowledging that her ultimate goal was also to be an actress.

Despite the career sacrifices, Hannah has been instrumental in many of Graham's projects. They co-own a production company, Matriarch Productions, which was behind the critically acclaimed film 'Boiling Point' and the Disney+ boxing drama 'A Thousand Blows'. Hannah also played Stephen's wife in the 2021 drama 'Time,' a role that Stephen suggested, though Hannah initially insisted on securing it through merit alone, auditioning properly to avoid any perception of favoritism.

Their shared production company also produced 'Adolescence,' a project where Hannah took on an acting role herself, contributing to its awards season success.
