Stephen Graham Details Suicide Attempt, Cites 'Higher Power' in Recovery

Actor Stephen Graham has spoken candidly about a suicide attempt in his early twenties, an event he believes was prevented by a "higher power." Graham, 53, shared the deeply personal experience in a recent interview, detailing the depression he faced after moving from his hometown of Kirkby to attend drama school in London.

The period was marked by significant personal loss, including his mother's miscarriage and the death of his grandmother. Overwhelmed and not properly grieving, Graham attempted to end his life by hanging. He recounted that the rope snapped, leading to his survival. "It was a higher power that saved me, it was something else," Graham stated, reflecting on his state as a "young man who was quite lost."

Graham initially hesitated to discuss this difficult chapter but ultimately decided it was "important." He explained that he had not processed the buildup of events, including leaving home and the family tragedies. He previously recalled hearing his late grandmother's voice during the attempt, which he initially mistook as a sign of passing on. Upon opening his eyes, he realized the rope had broken.

He attempted to conceal the marks on his neck from his family with a high-necked jumper, but his mother noticed. This led Graham to confide in his parents about the suicide attempt. He credits his family and subsequent counseling for helping him navigate through this dark time. Graham now emphasizes the importance of daily meditation, reiki, and exercise in maintaining his well-being.

"It was a difficult time but I've come through that. I have solid foundations and a strong sense of self now," he said.

Graham also acknowledged the crucial role his wife, Hannah Walters, played in his recovery. Walters, who was studying at the same drama school, was aware of his situation and remained in close contact with his mother. While their connection grew over time, Graham realized the depth of his feelings for Walters when she announced plans to move to Spain. He asked her on a date, confessed his love, and she accepted, leading to them moving in together the next day. They married in 2008 and have two children, Alfie and Grace.
