Stephen Graham Credits Wife Hannah Walters for Sacrificing Career

Stephen Graham made a rare public appearance with his wife, Hannah Walters, at the Burberry show during London Fashion Week on Monday. The actor, 53, sported a new beard and glasses, dressed in a black jacket and grey trousers. Walters, who met Graham when they were both trainee actors in the 1990s, wore a classic Burberry trench coat and a black bodycon dress, accessorizing with a Burberry clutch.

The couple, who married in 2008, met at the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance. After the birth of their children, Grace and Alfie, Walters took on a teaching job to provide a stable income while Graham pursued his acting career. Graham revealed on The Romesh Ranganathan Show that his wife "massively sacrificed" her own acting aspirations to support his dream. "She went and did a teaching job. She taught sixth form A-level Drama and English and she did other jobs as well. Do you know what I mean? In order to try and keep me going in many ways," he said. Graham expressed his gratitude, stating, "She put that on hold for me which is something that I you know I'll always cherish because of the faith and the backing that she gave me in them situations."

Walters, 52, confirmed this perspective in a 2022 interview with The i Paper, explaining that she had consistently taken a backseat in her career. "Stephen has had more of a prolific career, and when we were both starting out, one of us needed to get a normal job. Acting doesn’t help pay the mortgage when you’re young," she stated.

Despite their individual career paths, the couple has collaborated on screen. They both appeared in the 2006 series This Is England and the 2021 drama Time, where Walters played Graham's wife. Graham had suggested Walters for her role in Time, a move she initially found contentious, wanting to secure parts based on her own merit. She eventually auditioned through proper channels, securing the role independently.

Walters has also played a significant role behind the scenes. She is an executive producer at their joint production company, Matriarch Productions, which was involved in the single-take film Boiling Point (2021). Additionally, she was instrumental in developing their Disney+ boxing drama, A Thousand Blows, by presenting the concept to Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders.
