Stephen Garcia's Wife Provides Cancer Update After Surgery
Former South Carolina quarterback's cancer is surgically removed with no evidence of disease, wife reports.
Stephen Garcia, the former University of South Carolina quarterback, has had all of his Stage 4 colorectal cancer surgically removed, according to an update from his wife, Masha.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Masha Garcia stated that the surgical team confirmed a complete resection, successfully removing the cancer and leaving her husband with "No Evidence of Disease." She also clarified that while the cancer is out, Garcia is not officially cancer-free and faces a long journey of surveillance.
Garcia is reportedly out of surgery and in the Intensive Care Unit, having since been moved to a post-operative recovery room. His wife expressed gratitude for the public's love and prayers.
Garcia, 38, announced his diagnosis in May, stating at the time that he had a "great team of doctors" and was confident in their ability to "beat this!" He was diagnosed in April and began chemotherapy and radiation in early May, undergoing six rounds of treatment to shrink the tumor and prevent it from spreading to his liver.
During his collegiate career from 2008 to 2011, Garcia played for South Carolina, amassing 7,597 passing yards and 47 touchdowns. His most successful season was in 2010, when he threw for 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading the Gamecocks to their only appearance in the SEC Championship game.
Amid Garcia's health battle, his family launched the Quarterback Your Health foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting cancer patients and promoting accessible early detection.
