Stephen Curry Agrees to $116 Million Extension with Golden State Warriors

Stephen Curry has agreed to a two-year, $116 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, committing to a new deal that will see him finish his NBA career with the franchise.

Curry, 38, took time to make a decision on his future but has now opted to remain with the team that drafted him 15 years ago. The extension is worth $20 million less than his maximum salary and includes a player option for the 2028-29 season. This agreement means Curry is set to play his 19th, and potentially 20th, season with the Warriors as the team pursues its fifth NBA Championship together.

The resolution of Curry's future comes after an offseason filled with speculation, particularly surrounding LeBron James's move to the Philadelphia 76ers. Prior to James's decision, there was considerable talk of him potentially joining Curry in Golden State.

Curry himself acknowledged attempting to recruit James to the Warriors. "If anybody didn't try, I think they'd be a fool," Curry stated in an interview earlier this month. In the same conversation with NBC Sports Bay Area, he also expressed a desire to be a "lifer" with the Golden State franchise.

Earlier in August, general manager Mike Dunleavy indicated that Curry's future was ultimately his to decide. "I'm pretty confident Steph will finish his career here," Dunleavy said at the time. "Ultimately it's his call, his decision, whether that's allowing his contract to run out and move on."

Last season, Curry averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds, but his season was limited to 43 games due to a nagging knee injury. Coach Steve Kerr, who also recently signed a two-year contract, plans to closely manage Curry's playing time.

"I think with the knee, other injuries and then his age, it's definitely something we have to manage," Dunleavy commented on managing Curry's workload.

Kerr also addressed the speculation surrounding LeBron James's potential move to the Warriors, stating on The Tom Tolbert Show that it never felt like a serious possibility. "I don't think it's exactly earth-shattering news, or I don't think I'll get fined for saying, like, it never really felt like he was, you know, coming here," Kerr said. "It was more, to me, it was more speculation than anything."

Kerr noted that fans around the Bay Area expressed relief that James did not join the team, with some viewing him as a rival. "People will randomly come up to me and say, 'I'm glad we didn't get LeBron,' and I'm like, 'Really?' Like, and they're like, 'Yeah, it's like he's not supposed to be on our team. He's a rival,'" Kerr shared.
