Stephen Colbert is set to return to late-night television as a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Tuesday. His appearance comes one night after the Primetime Emmy Awards, where his former CBS program, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” is nominated for Outstanding Variety Series.

Kimmel confirmed Colbert's guest spot during his show on Thursday, drawing a reaction from the audience. Colbert has been away from late-night television since concluding “The Late Show” in May.

Colbert’s program is nominated for six Emmys. In a previous Emmy acceptance speech, former “Late Show” executive producer Tom Purcell acknowledged the importance of late-night institutions, thanking staff and crew and calling Colbert “the best host” and “best boss in the world.”

Kimmel himself had previously supported Colbert’s Emmy campaign, running a Billboard ad for him ahead of last year's ceremony. "The Late Show" went on to win its first Emmy Award the following month. “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is also vying for its first Emmy Award in the Outstanding Variety Series category on Monday.
