Former writers from "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" have launched a new podcast called "Jokes On News," continuing their satirical commentary on political figures, particularly Donald Trump.

Eliana Kwartler, Michael Cruz Kayne, Asher Perlman, and Steve Waltien, who were part of Colbert's writing team, released their first episode on Thursday. The 36-minute debut, titled "We Wrote For The Late Show. Now We Do This," aims to provide entertainment for audiences who enjoy "watching late-night television and laughing about the absurdity of what’s happening."

The writers quickly turned their attention to the political landscape in their inaugural episode. They targeted the Republican Party's recent midterm convention and Trump's pledge to give Americans $5,000 if Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate. One segment humorously recounted an alleged conversation between Trump and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson about creating a "midterm convention."

Kwartler set up the joke by recounting an anecdote where Trump purportedly called Johnson two nights before Thanksgiving, proposing the convention, to which Johnson reportedly responded, "That’s not a thing." Trump's alleged reply was, "Make it a thing." Kwartler then added, "And look, in fairness, we’ve all gotten high with our cousins in the garage two nights before Thanksgiving and come up with what we thought was an amazing idea."
