Stephen A. Smith Faces Backlash Over Remarks on Lane Johnson's Retirement
ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith drew criticism for his comments regarding Eagles player Lane Johnson's retirement due to mental health, with an attempted clarification further fueling fan anger.
Stephen A. Smith is facing renewed criticism for remarks made about Philadelphia Eagles player Lane Johnson's retirement, which was attributed to mental health struggles. Smith's initial comments on ESPN's 'First Take' were perceived by many as mocking Johnson's decision to end his career four games into the 2026 season.
Johnson, who has previously been open about his mental health challenges, stated that personal and family priorities had shifted, necessitating a focus on his well-being. Smith, however, questioned the timing of Johnson's retirement, suggesting the chaotic state of the Eagles' offense might have been the primary driver.
Smith's commentary sparked widespread condemnation on social media, prompting him to address the matter on his Sirius XM radio show. During this segment, Smith did not offer a direct apology to Johnson or for his specific words, instead stating he was sorry that his remarks were "misconstrued."
He then shared his own experiences with mental health issues, including undergoing therapy after his mother's death, to emphasize his sensitivity to the topic. Smith clarified that his intention was not to downplay mental health but to comment on the stressful environment within the Eagles organization.
"I was talking about the Eagles and how chaotic this situation is can drive you to it," Smith explained. He posited that the immense stress of injuries and team struggles could lead a player to prioritize a better life and family over continuing to play.
This explanation, however, did not appease critics. Many on social media viewed Smith's response as an inadequate apology, an attempt to shift blame, and a centering of himself in the narrative. Comments suggested that Smith had indeed minimized mental health and that his attempt to clarify was disingenuous, with some calling for his dismissal from ESPN.
