Stephen A. Smith Defends Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg's Verbal Sparring with Luka Dončić
The ESPN host criticized Dončić for 'whining to the officials' but supported Lendeborg's competitive fire.
ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith has weighed in on the heated exchange between Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg and Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić during their recent game, backing Lendeborg's competitive spirit despite disagreeing with his assessment of Dončić's play.
During an episode of "First Take," Smith addressed the incident, acknowledging that while he doesn't believe Dončić "sucks" as a player, he supports Lendeborg's aggressive approach on the court. "I do agree with him going after Luka the way that he did, competing the way that he competed," Smith stated.
Smith also voiced his displeasure with a technical foul called on Lendeborg in the second quarter, suggesting that the NBA should allow players more leeway in their on-court verbal exchanges. "I was really, really ticked off when that referee gave Yaxel Lendeborg that technical foul in the second quarter… I’m calling out the NBA. NBA gotta stop that nonsense! Let them talk!"
The rookie Lendeborg reportedly lost "all respect" for Dončić following their trash-talking match. The interaction has generated significant buzz, with many gaining respect for Lendeborg's willingness to engage with one of the league's top players in his NBA debut. The next matchup between the Warriors and Lakers on October 30 is now anticipated with heightened interest.
Smith's comments suggest a continued emphasis on competitive intensity in the league, even if it leads to confrontational moments. The incident highlights the intensity of NBA rivalries and the scrutiny faced by young players entering the league.
