Stephen A. Smith has refused to retract his comments labeling the Los Angeles Lakers' roster as 'White Dude Central,' a statement that has drawn accusations of racism. The ESPN personality addressed the controversy on his YouTube channel, directly responding to former Fox Sports host Emmanuel Acho.

Earlier in the week, Smith generated significant backlash for his remarks concerning the Lakers' newly assembled core, which includes players such as Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler. Smith argued that the franchise could not effectively compete for an NBA championship with an all-white group of star players leading the team.

Acho criticized Smith's commentary on his show, 'Speakeasy,' calling the take 'racist' and asserting that it played into stereotypes that have historically hindered Black quarterbacks. "You don't have the luxury of crying out 'racism' and then simultaneously spewing a racist remark. We just don't have that luxury," Acho stated, adding that no one was obligated to make such a comment.

Despite being on a scheduled break, Smith released a video defending his position. He characterized Acho's critique as a "weak argument" and reiterated his stance on the Lakers' offseason strategy. "I'm going to say what I feel," Smith declared. "Every truth ain't meant to be told, particularly at certain times. And I'm sensitive to that... but damn."

Smith pointed to the team's roster changes, including the departure of LeBron James, as the basis for his skepticism about the new squad's championship potential. "The Lakers recently agreed to the deal [for] Luka, you turn around and sign Austin Reaves. Not only that, you go out and you get Walker Kessler," Smith said. "In the meantime, LeBron James walks out the building... and I'm saying, 'Hey, these are the Lakers. That ain't gonna cut it.'"

Smith also questioned Acho's criticism, given his history of hosting 'uncomfortable conversations' and using provocative language. "I didn't know you were the kind of brother that felt like certain things shouldn't be said," Smith taunted. "That's news to me, considering how many things you say... I'm kind of surprised hearing that from you... considering the inordinate amount of subjects you tackle that nobody thinks to tackle."

Smith concluded by emphasizing that his comments were related to basketball strategy and team composition, not racial prejudice. He stated that he respects the many white athletes who have achieved success in the NBA throughout its history. Stephen A.
