Stephen A. Smith Declares Deshaun Watson NFL's Comeback Player of the Year Front-Runner
ESPN analyst cites Watson's leadership in five fourth-quarter comeback wins and the Cleveland Browns' current AFC North lead.
Stephen A. Smith, host of ESPN's "First Take," has declared Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson the front-runner for the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award. Smith described his assessment as "uncomfortable to say it, but it's true," during a recent broadcast.
The Browns currently hold a 5-2 record entering Week 8, positioning them to potentially lead the AFC North after their upcoming matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A significant factor in Cleveland's improved performance this season has been Watson's return to form and his ability to remain healthy. Despite facing criticism for being named the starting quarterback before the regular season, Watson has thrown for over 1,400 yards in seven games and has provided stability for the team.
Smith highlighted Watson's crucial role in the Browns' five come-from-behind victories in the fourth quarter this season, attributing these wins to his leadership on the field. "Five wins, first place in the division, all five wins were come from behind victories in the fourth quarter. Led by him," Smith stated.
Watson's career since joining the Browns has been marked by challenges. His acquisition by Cleveland followed his departure from the Houston Texans amid sexual misconduct allegations. Since then, he has also dealt with significant injuries. Watson's availability has been limited since 2020, when he led the NFL in passing yards. He has played in seven or fewer games in each subsequent season, navigating lawsuits, a suspension, and rehabilitation from shoulder and Achilles injuries.
The Cleveland Browns have been part of the AFC North since the league's 2002 realignment and have yet to win the division title. Watson and the Browns are scheduled to play the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend.
