Stephen A. Smith Apologizes for Spreading False Divorce Details
The sports commentator corrected widely circulated misinformation about Iman Shumpert and Teyana Taylor's financial settlement.
Stephen A. Smith has issued a public apology for disseminating inaccurate information regarding the divorce settlement between former NBA player Iman Shumpert and actress Teyana Taylor.
On his podcast, "The Culture Table," Smith had claimed that Taylor received $25 million in cash and $10 million in property, while Shumpert was left with approximately $2 million and no home. He has since admitted these figures were false.
Smith explained that the erroneous information was based on claims circulating on social media and in media reports, which were falsely attributed to Shumpert. "The quotes attributed to him, however, were not his statements at all, and the financial figures presented were inaccurate," Smith stated.
He clarified that he personally spoke with Teyana Taylor, who verified that the circulating details were false. Smith took responsibility for repeating unsubstantiated information, emphasizing the broader lesson about media consumption. "What circulates online is not necessarily true as we all know. And a claim does not become a fact simply because it has been repeated or attributed to a public figure," he said.
Shumpert and Taylor, who married in 2016, finalized their divorce in 2024. They share two daughters. Shumpert concluded an 11-year NBA career in 2021, having been part of the Cleveland Cavaliers' 2016 championship team. Taylor has since gained acclaim for her acting roles, including in Paul Thomas Anderson's film "One Battle After Another."
This apology follows another instance earlier in the week where Smith retracted comments made about the retirement of Philadelphia Eagles' right tackle Lane Johnson. Smith had initially appeared to downplay Johnson's stated reasons for retirement, which included prioritizing mental health. He later apologized, acknowledging that he had made light of mental health issues.
